C-Section recovery & scar therapy

Healing after a C-section goes deeper than the scar alone

A Caesarean birth is major abdominal surgery, yet many women receive very little support once the wound itself has healed.

Months — or even years — later, you may still experience:

  • Numbness or tightness around the scar
  • Pulling or discomfort in the abdomen
  • Weakness through the core
  • Pelvic floor symptoms
  • Lower back or pelvic pain
  • Discomfort during exercise
  • Feeling disconnected from your body
  • Anxiety about movement or recovery
  • Ongoing emotional effects from your birth experience

Many women are told this is simply something they need to “put up with” after having a baby. But ongoing discomfort, tension or disconnection after a C-section is common — and support is available.

C-Section recovery & scar therapy

Why can symptoms persist after a C-section?

During a Caesarean birth, several layers of tissue are affected, including the skin, fascia, muscles and the tissues surrounding the abdominal and pelvic organs. As healing takes place, scar tissue forms as a normal part of recovery.

Sometimes these tissues can become restricted, affecting the way the abdomen, pelvis and surrounding structures move and function. This can contribute to symptoms that seem unrelated to the scar itself, including back pain, pelvic discomfort, abdominal weakness or difficulty returning to exercise.

For some women, recovery is also influenced by their experience of pregnancy, birth and early motherhood. Physical healing and emotional recovery often go hand in hand.

My approach looks beyond the scar itself to understand how your whole body has adapted following pregnancy, birth and surgery.

As well as scar therapy and rehabilitation, I am trained in Visceral Manipulation, a specialist hands-on therapy that assesses how the internal organs and surrounding connective tissues are moving following pregnancy and birth. Restrictions within these tissues can sometimes be a missing piece of the recovery puzzle.

My training in Somatic Experiencing also allows me to recognise when unresolved stress or birth trauma may be influencing recovery, helping to create a safe and supportive space for healing.

For women who would like structured support and guidance through their recovery, I offer the PhysioNatal® C-Section Recovery Programme.

This comprehensive programme combines specialist assessment, hands-on treatment, scar therapy, rehabilitation and education to help you recover with confidence and reconnect with your body after Caesarean birth.

The programme includes:

✔ Ongoing support tailored to your stage of recovery

Go at your own pace

Recovery after a Caesarean birth is not a race.

Some women seek support within weeks of birth, while others come months or even years later. The programme remains valid for 12 months, allowing you to progress at a pace that feels right for you and your body.

Is the programme right for me?

The PhysioNatal® C-Section Recovery Programme is ideal if you:

  • Want structured support following a Caesarean birth
  • Feel disconnected from your scar or abdomen
  • Have ongoing tightness, numbness or discomfort
  • Are concerned about abdominal recovery or diastasis recti
  • Want expert guidance on returning to exercise
  • Would value ongoing support rather than a single appointment

Whether your baby is six weeks old or six years old, it is never too late to improve the way your scar and body feel.

Many women leave feeling relieved to better understand what is happening in their body, reassured that their symptoms make sense, and confident that there is a way forward.
