Persistent pain & complex symptoms
Looking beyond the symptom
Persistent pain and complex symptoms are rarely the result of a single factor. I often think of them as a pie chart, with different influences contributing to the overall picture. Physical restrictions, previous injuries, surgery, stress, trauma, beliefs, sleep, movement and general health can all play a role. While these factors are common to many people, their relative contribution will vary considerably from one individual to another.
For some, physical factors such as scar tissue, injury or movement restrictions may be playing the biggest role. For others, prolonged stress, difficult life experiences, nervous system dysregulation or unhelpful beliefs about pain and recovery may have become important contributors.
This doesn’t mean symptoms are “all in your head.” The mind and body are constantly communicating. Our thoughts, emotions and experiences influence our physiology, just as physical pain and illness can affect our emotional wellbeing.
When symptoms persist, it is often helpful to look beyond the site of pain and consider the bigger picture.
How I can help
As a Chartered Physiotherapist with over 20 years of clinical experience, I combine physiotherapy with advanced training in Visceral Manipulation, therapeutic touch and Somatic Experiencing.
This allows me to consider not only the physical aspects of pain and recovery, but also the role that previous experiences, nervous system patterns and stress responses may be playing.
Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis, I take the time to understand your story and identify the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include hands-on treatment, visceral manipulation, rehabilitation, movement advice and nervous-system-informed approaches.
Finding clarity and a way forward
My goal is not simply to reduce pain. It is to help you understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and identify practical steps towards recovery.
Many people leave feeling relieved that their symptoms finally make sense. With greater understanding often comes reassurance, confidence and renewed hope that change is possible.
You are not a difficult case, and your story is not a burden.
Together, we can begin to understand what your body may be trying to tell us and find a way forward.
